Assessing the UT Quarterback Position

Football time in Tennessee begins in 76 days. Us Tennessee fans are still wanting to know who will be the starting QB this year. It is considered a 3 horse race right now. For the first time that I can remember there was not a QB in our signing class so we are stuck with the 3 players who started a game last season. Riley Ferguson just recently decided to transfer. Many expected him to win the job. He took a redshirt last season because of an injury. This leaves a void. Let us take a look at the 3 candidates.

Justin Worley (#14):
Probably the most likely candidate to win the job. He is the Senior while the other two are Sophomores. Derek Dooley blew his redshirt his first year by having him take one snap at the end of the game. Worley played awful early on and lost his job for the Florida game. He came back for the second half and played decent. He played great during the Georgia and South Carolina games. He was lousy against Alabama and eventually broke his hand in the game which forced him to miss the rest of the season.

Joshua Dobbs (#11):
Dobbs had a tough task by having to come in midway through the Alabama game and starting the Missouri, Auburn, Vandy and Kentucky games so he gained some experience by playing against 3 Top 5 teams plus Vanderbilt. He is the quickest and most explosive of the 3 and can add a different dynamic with his speed if Butch Jones lets him. He showed flashes of potential but needs to work on his pocket passing. If he improves that he can be very dangerous.

Nathan Peterman (#12):
Every Tennessee fan remembers the first half of the Florida game. If Nathan Peterman never takes another snap at QB at Tennessee that will be his legacy. He was awful, one of the worst performances I have ever seen. He also had an injury that game and never played the rest of the season. I am sure he is working hard to prove that that performance was just a fluke and he is better than that.

My Depth Chart:
1. Worley
2. Dobbs
3. Peterman

I know this is the most predictable choice but this is how the depth chart should look like. Worley is the Senior leader and deserves to play. Dobbs and Peterman did not do much to make us excited for the future. If Worley plays awful, then put Dobbs in and see what he can do. Worley should be able to do a serviceable job. If so, we should get a good QB in our recruiting class who will start the year after next.

Until Next Time,
Nathan Krispin
